THE SERVICE
What is AI Risk Assessment?
An AI risk assessment looks at a defined use case in its real business context. It considers how information enters the system, what the system produces, who relies on the output and what happens when it is wrong, unavailable or misused.
A good fit: Useful before a pilot or launch, when expanding an existing AI tool, or when a current use has not received a structured review.
WHAT SMART FLOW AI DELIVERS
Practical outputs. Clear responsibilities.
We agree the scope before work begins. Depending on your requirements, the engagement can include:
01
Use-case and data-flow definition
Document the purpose, users, data sources, suppliers, integrations and decisions the AI will support.
02
Risk and impact review
Assess relevant concerns such as inaccurate output, privacy, confidentiality, security, bias, reliability and inappropriate reliance.
03
Supplier and configuration questions
Identify the evidence needed about data use, retention, access, permissions and the provider's role in your workflow.
04
Practical control recommendations
Recommend proportionate safeguards such as approved knowledge, restricted access, output checking, human escalation and fallback procedures.
05
Risk register and action plan
Record findings, existing controls, gaps, accountable owners and prioritised actions for management consideration.
06
Decision and review requirements
Explain residual concerns, launch conditions and when the assessment should be revisited, including whether specialist assessments are needed.
POTENTIAL CLIENT BENEFITS
What could improve for your organisation?
Spot problems before reliance grows
Identify weaknesses while the design and operating arrangements can still be changed.
Make ownership explicit
Give teams clear actions and a documented basis for decisions and follow-up.
Apply safeguards proportionately
Focus effort on the use, information and people most exposed to harm.
The value depends on your starting position, agreed scope and adoption. We define suitable measures so you can assess what changes in practice.
ILLUSTRATIVE CLIENT EXAMPLE
A customer-service team introducing an AI response assistant
THE STARTING POINT
Staff plan to paste whole customer files into a new tool and send its replies with limited checking. The provider's reuse terms and the route for difficult cases are unclear.
HOW THE SERVICE COULD HELP
We assess the workflow, identify the information that is actually needed, review supplier questions and recommend an approved knowledge set, limited permissions, staff verification and escalation for sensitive cases.
How the client could assess value
The client could monitor unsupported responses, inappropriate disclosures, escalations and the proportion of outputs requiring correction during a controlled pilot.
HOW WE WORK
A clear route from discussion to useful outcomes.
01
Define the use
Agree the assessment boundary, stakeholders and information needed to understand the proposed workflow.
02
Assess the exposure
Examine likely failure scenarios, existing safeguards and evidence gaps with the relevant teams.
03
Set actions and review points
Present the findings, ownership and conditions that support a reasoned management decision.
QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU START
Make an informed next step.
Is this the same as a data protection impact assessment?
No. An AI risk review can identify the need for a DPIA or another specialist assessment and can support that work. The required assessments depend on the processing, impacts and applicable requirements.
Does the assessment guarantee that an AI system is safe or compliant?
No assessment removes every risk. The output provides evidence, recommendations and unresolved issues for accountable decision-makers, with review as the system or its use changes.
